The Joy Of Remastering
Let's do it again!
I noticed something strange. Lately I’ve spent quite a bit of time going back through old Code Career Genius videos to re-edit them and post them to my YouTube channel. And I’m doing the same with my book on creativity. And I’m doing the same with the Zero To Python course.
What I’m finding is a surprise to me.
For my old work, I simultaneously love it and hate it. Rediscovering it is both sublime and terrible.
On one hand I can look at it and see the warts. With a lot of my videos I am long winded and desperately need an editor. I don’t always love some the editing or direction. Some topics are going to disappear into the dustbin forever.
So yeah, warts.
On the other hand there are nuggets of gold in there. With some care and skill they can be crafted into something valuable. There are good reasons I did those projects in the first place. I still like my creation.
So I can’t throw it all away either.
That’s the beauty of doing stuff. You don’t get it right every time, but you aren’t always far from greatness either. Nobody is perfect and nobody is a total failure. We all sit somewhere in the middle.
But that’s what is so great about people. Yes, there are terrible bits. But… we have so much potential to improve. Growth is possible in so many areas.
Your potential is so much greater than you can see from where you are standing.
Only looking back at the previous versions of ourselves years later can we see the beauty and folly of who we are right now.
Going back and reviving my old work is showing me that. It’s a humbling experience.
If you have the chance, it might be worth revisiting your old projects too. You never know what you might remember about yourself along the way.
May God bless your work!
