Tetris is one of my all time favorite games. I spent so much time playing Tetris DX on the Game Boy Color and I still play Tetris 99 on the Switch.
So I was surprised to hear that someone managed to get the kill screen on the original Tetris for the NES. This is something akin to the 4 minute mile or the 2 hour marathon. It’s a big deal.
This video covers it pretty well:

What is wild to me is there is an entire new generation of kids who are super into old school Tetris. Some of them are even making a bit of prize money or have growing social media followings.
Off of a 40 year old video game!!!
I find that to be completely amazing. And for as much as I am pretty good at Tetris myself, the way the top players play looks like a different planet to me. The physical technique to be able to operate the game at the highest speed is bonkers. Go watch the video and see for yourself.
The fact that Tetris for the original Nintendo endures to this day is a bit unbelievable. I wonder if any modern games will still be played in 40 years. Maybe Fortnite? I don’t know.
Anyway, it’s cool to see Tetris still being relevant in the year 2024.
