As I’ve gotten into PICO-8, my kids started asking how to make their own video games with PICO-8. So of course I got them started and ran them through the basics.
But it gave me an idea…
Sitting down and teaching my kids individually is great, but it would be useful for them to have a collection of little tutorials for PICO-8 that they can run through as many times as they want.
So I am starting to make little PICO-8 tutorials.
This is not my attempt to make a full course on making games with PICO-8. These are supposed to be tiny, self-contained lessons. It’s a combination of video and text. Video on top of the page, text and code below. So in case I don’t explain it perfectly in text, you can just watch me do it on video.
One fun little bit is I was able to style the code on the page to use the PICO-8 font and color scheme. So it matches the PICO-8 code editor experience almost perfectly.
And it’s all free. No ads. No popups. Mobile friendly.
Just nice little tutorials, like you used to be able to find on the internet.
Anyway, the first tutorial is of course Hello World PICO-8 Tutorial because of course it is. I plan on posting more PICO-8 tutorials at: http://brianknapp.me/tutorials/pico-8.html as I make them.
And that is the fun new thing I’m poking around at as I make games with PICO-8. I’m not planning on emailing about every single tutorial, but I thought this project might be interesting or useful to all of you reading this right now.
That’s all for today, enjoy your Saturday!
